A History - About Us

The corner of Bogard and Rutledge ave has always been a bare empty lot. In the beginning of 2010 this all changed. Across the street lived Matt Gregory and Jono Watson who both (along with Fritz Stine and Nikki Seibert) wanted to transform this empty space into a place of beauty and an asset to all in the surrounding area which would strengthen neighborhood bonds, create friendships, and share the love of gardening. The owner of the property graciously decided to lend his property to the Elliotborough & Cannonborough neighborhood for one dollar a month, after clearing some permits with the city of Charleston. We first broke ground February 20th, cleaning up the debris and installed stakes that would soon be our present day rope fence. Alliance for Planet Earth of the College of Charleston had been called upon to help in fundraising, the construction of the box's, laying the soil and mulch, later to be joined by CofC's Urban Agriculture Club to aid in the upkeep. Most of the garden beds are free to the public to pick their own veggies fresh from the vine! Yum! But please take notice of the private ones too. Anyone and everyone can plant flowers around the property or put in some vegetable/ herb seeds into the Public* boxes, we encourage you to do so. To reduce the use of county water and lack there of, A rainwater barrel system was put into place. A rain gutter on one of "Connie-Reality" homes was installed and runs into 4 barrels so when filled up, it can be used to water the garden.

The Bogarden is a recipient of the 2010 Charleston County Community Prize Award and was also named a Charleston Friendly Yard.
